While competent in its direction and pacing, there’s something to be said about how the modern big, successful american animation works can’t break away from what’s expected of cartoons regarding structure, tone, characterization and it sometimes feels like they’re only made to be subversive for the sake of it. What sets them apart from each on its imagery and visual style but after that they just follow a predefined path that feels repetitive, kind of off-putting -specially its commedy- and not as engaging or interesting as it could, also losing some of its humanity along the way. The need to comply to this formula makes a story about identity, human relationships through the digital world and internet communities as safe spaces not reach the heights it could, but it’s still beautiful and hopeful and that’s more than enough.
